March Task Meeting

Speaker 1: From the Floor at Shmoocon (Brian Bourne, CMS Consulting)
Brian attended the annual east-coast security conference, Shmoocon ( ), this past January. He’ll be reporting on the cutting-edge research that he heard on-stage and off, and giving us a preview of the types of speakers and content that we’ll be seeing at Sector this fall.

Speaker 2: The Failure of Penetration Testing (Robb Beggs, DigitalDefence)
There is enormous “cool” to having an ethical hacker break into your network, but this type of security testing is frequently the worst possible control to implement! Robb will discuss what a penetration test is, and isn’t, client-side mistakes (especially poorly written RFPs!), and the delivery pitfalls that plague the testers. Using material based on Canadian case studies, the “secrets” of a successful penetration test will be identified.

Upcoming TASK events:
April 27th – “Soft Skills” Night
TASK speakers will be focusing on the often neglected skills that allow security professionals to stand out from the crowd, including job search techniques, resume writing, interviewing skills, speaking in public, negotiations, effective use of social engineering, and “business presentation”.

May 25 – “Hands-On Hacking” Night
Imagine speed talks – but instead of power point presentations and overview slides, it’s a night of practical demonstrations of the latest tools and techniques to “proactively test security”. You’ve got 15 minutes, maximum, for each demonstration – what will YOU show off at TASK?

June 29 – TBD
We’re not sure what will be happening at TASK that night, but it will be more awesome than 5-pin bowling with Charlie Sheen!

July 27 – TBD
Last Wednesday of the month … you know it will be great!

August 31 – Blackhat / DefCon / BSides Wrap Up
At the end of July, a whole bunch of TASKers headed down to Vegas for the largest convention of real security people in the world – what will they discover? What are the newest security threats? What are you now watching for on your network? And does what happens in Vegas REALLY stay in Vegas? Only one way to find out ….
